To say “don’t let anything bother you” would be irresponsible. If you suffer from depression, constant or episodic, then the upcoming holidays may be a concern. Why are the holidays a problem? Family gatherings, gift giving, office parties, merriment seems to be everywhere – and you may just want to hide in your NYC apartment and ignore it all.
I never expect you to put aside how you are feeling. It is so important to acknowledge whatever it is that is bothering you (or the multitude of things). Take time for yourself and put in place strategies so you can make it through the season and even have some fun!
- Be reasonable. If your depression works hand-in-hand with your anxiety then do not put pressure on yourself to find the perfect gift for the masses. Make donations, buy gift cards, or cut the list of individuals you exchange presents with this year.
- Take time for yourself: This can include an early afternoon skate in the park or a walk to see and enjoy the holiday window displays. You can catch a yoga class, enjoy afternoon tea with a friend, or learn a new recipe by taking a cooking class.
- Do something for another. There are many volunteer opportunities here in NYC during the holiday season.
- Stay busy but schedule down-time
